Year End Course Review...

With the 2019 golf season in our rearview and the holiday season on the horizon, we look back on both the successes and failures of the past year. It was a historical time as the torch was passed on to a new Golf Course Superintendent for the first time since the Club's inception. It is my professional opinion and I am sure many of you would agree that overall course conditions for the year were less than ideal and certainly less than intended. Both the fairways and teeing surfaces took a beating from a combination of factors, not least of which was related to our ability to consistently apply water. On the other hand, putting surfaces struggled early but showed vast improvement over the course of the season. This transition year was about identifying organizational weaknesses relating to the conditions and performance of the golf course, with an eye on improvement for 2020 and beyond. A large portion of that effort focused simply on organization and removal of nonessential items and materials. The equipment fleet was in need of the most attention with many pieces either in disrepair or requiring constant attention to keep running. These issues have been addressed in a monumental way with the addition of new equipment purchases to upgrade and replace a large percentage of the total equipment fleet. These decisions on specific equipment have been tailored toward more efficient use which will allow for the most frequent maintenance tasks to be completed in a more timely manner. The biggest upgrade to efficiency will come with our new maintenance cart fleet. Our current utility vehicles are electric powered and have manual dump beds. This does not provide for much hauling capability and the aging electric motors cause issues and failures. The new vehicles will be powered by gasoline engines with plenty of hauling power and electric dump beds that allow for one-person operation. The more that we can limit wasted time and resources, the greater improvements we can hope to achieve on the golf course. The next few months will focus on continued efforts to improve the operation, taking the lessons learned from this difficult year and preparing for a stronger 2020. We hope you enjoy the upcoming holidays and we look forward to seeing you around the grounds next year!
